Bass Harbor Lighthouse Sunset, Acadia National Park, Maine

Located on the rugged, rocky southwestern shore of Mount Desert Island, the Bass Harbor Head lighthouse is one of the most frequently photographed sites in Acadia National Park. Built in 1858 in Tremont, the lighthouse rises 56 feet above mean high water. Several previous attempts at photographing this beautiful site were frustrated by dense New England fog or bland blue sky. On this particular evening, however, Mother Nature was in my favor. Because there are often many photographers shooting the sunset on the rocks beneath, I arrived early, set up, and composed my capture so that the lighthouse would be reflected in a puddle of seawater left by the receding tide. Due to the unique shape of the coastline, I opted for bracketing exposures and manually combining them instead of utilizing a graduated neutral density filter.
