Jordan Pond, Acadia National Park

Photography of the night sky has recently become a focus of many dedicated landscape photographers as it taps into man’s natural fascination with all things celestial by revealing incredible details in the heavens above, both seen and unseen. On my recent trip to Maine’s Acadia National Park, a beautiful clear autumn night with the Milky Way visible to the naked eye was the perfect setting for capturing nightscapes. The calm conditions at Jordan Pond aided my composition as the stars glowing ever so brightly above were reflected in the foreground water, adding significant impact to the image above appropriately entitled “Starstruck.” I captured sequential 30-second exposures in less than an hour, which were later combined to reveal the rotation of the earth relative to the stars over that time period.

Technique: Nikon D700, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 lens at 14mm, f/2.8, ISO 1600. Multiple (to be precise, 108) sequential 30-second exposures were captured and after minimal adjustments in Lightroom, combined in StarStaX. Final adjustments in Photoshop involved noise reduction and application of a luminosity mask (see Tony Kuyper’s fantastic tutorial).

I also framed a photograph of the Milky Way with the silhouetted pine trees lining Jordan Pound in the foreground (Nikon D700Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 lens at 14mm, f/2.8, ISO 1600, single 30-second exposure). I found that both the single exposure and star trail images were equally effective and unique at capturing the crispness of that beautiful New England evening.

  • Thanks Alexander, you’ve inspired me to try a night-sky shot. It’s getting closer to winter here and the colder weather makes for a clearer sky.
Excellent pov on the first shot!

Thank you so much Paul, I’m glad I was able to provide some inspiration. Give it a shot, you will definitely enjoy it and likely find starscapes are quite addictive! Let me know if you have any questions.
