Sandstone Striations, Coyote Buttes North, Arizona

Visiting a well-photographed location such as the Coyote Buttes North in Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness often presents a creative challenge for the photographer. In my opinion, while there is value in obtaining classic captures of the Wave, one should also strive for original compositions.

"Sandstone Striations"

While attempting to do exactly that, I noted compelling purple to magenta striations I thought would make for a beautiful abstract image. By collapsing the tripod and adopting a relatively low perspective, the rhythmic curves became even more interesting. However, the composition did not come together until the convergence of these curved lines towards the right of the frame paralleled the direction of the glowing ridges seen in the background. The warm, orange late afternoon light emphasized the contrasting colors and bounced onto the foreground laminae. I completed the capture by obtaining two shots for optimal exposure of the foreground and background elements (at f/18 for satisfactory front-to-back sharpness), which were subsequently combined in Photoshop.

  • Very nice, as usual, Alex – I like how the rear image has so much warmth while the one in the foreground has a much cooler look to it. Nice, blend, concept, and work!
