Top Photos of 2012

The incredible difficulty in selecting my favorite images from the past year reflects the wealth of photographs I have been able to capture while experiencing the changing seasons in some of the most amazing locations in North America. After spending a couple of gray winter months in New York City catching up on processing images shot during the holiday season in the Southwest, my beautiful fiancée and I gladly greeted spring in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee. I returned to Moab for a week in late May when the desert sun was already strong. Cool alpine winds in August at Glacier National Park, Montana were a welcome relief from the hot summer days in the city. Before I knew it, another Zodiac had gone around as I watched the glory of autumn fade into the chill of winter at Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

I have also been blessed with new and exciting opportunities. While shooting in Glacier and the Tetons I was working with the Sigma Corporation of America in exploring the full potential of their flagship DSLR, the Sigma SD1 Merrill, for purposes of nature photography (see the last three images in this post). A couple of unrelated magazine publications are to come – more details on that later.

Most importantly  – and certainly the biggest event in my life this year – is my upcoming wedding to the love of my life Sarah Jane on December 22 in New York City! A great photographer in her own right, she has supported me on every trip and is the inspiration behind many of the images that you know.

Anyway, here are the top ten, in no particular order…

  • Gorgeous set of images Alex. Hard to pick a favorite, but I guess I would have to say “Tribute in Light”. Not only is it a great image, but it is full of meaning and so transitory.

  • Love “The Mollusk”, Alex. The repetitive patterns and subtle contrasts suck you right in. Not that the others aren’t also great, don’t get me wrong — but that one is really striking. (Considering the number of images from the slot canyons being spilled out each year, especially so.)

    • Thanks a lot – it was one of those shots that once I pressed the shutter, I knew it’s gonna be a keeper. 🙂 We all love that feeling…
You’ve got a great set yourself – wishing you more sweet shots this year!
